This year I will be joining a team of 8 fellow network security students on UAT's Cyber Defense team. We will be taking a road trip to sunny Pomona, California to compete in the Western Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition.
We will be competing with 4 other Universities at California State Polytechnic University. The winner of this can then move onto the nationals in San Antonio, Texas.
When we get there, we will be handed a network as if we just got hired into a new company and the old administrator was not very security conscious. While there we will have to perform simulations of executives giving us items to implement such as printer shares, adding new user accounts, and performing backups. On top of this, there will be a Red Team trying to break into our network. We gain points based on keeping services such as FTP, HTTP, and SMTP alive and accessible and lose points for each successful break in to our network. We also gain points for completing the various tasks they assign.
Our team has setup a similar network in our school's computer lab and had three of our best professors perform scans and try to break in. This has definitely been a great experience so far and I'm looking forward to the competition.
